GRAMMAR

I used to think that somebody somewhere has the answers to all grammatical dilemmas. But the truth is language evolves, and most of the time we are in the middle of it evolving.

I’ve managed to lose a lot of sleep over whether I should be using around or round. Just when I thought I had the answer and found the authority on the subject I’d been looking for, it slipped away from me and I had to start again.

Forever or for ever is another one. It starts getting muddled in the 17th century in the U.K. and then flips back and forth until we have what we have now, in that nobody really knows for sure. In Scarlet – Defender of the Universe I thought about these two words for days. Getting no closer to the actual answer.

I imagine that not a single person (who isn’t a proof reader or editor) will notice.
